Take photos, either inside at the conference, or outside at the Arboretum. We'll upload a few of your photos to the Heron Network web site. If you have a digital camera with a cable for downloading photos, you may want to bring both along. Otherwise, you can share a camera with a few other students.
Group Challenge Led by Bert Zipperer, School Counselor, Sennett Middle School
We want to create a community where everyone is included and treated fairly. Activities include: a Welcome Circle, where we find out what we have in common with others; Puzzle Pairs, where we find our partners and role play ways to fairly include others; and a Community Talking Circle, where we listen to each member of our workshop group.
Signs of Life in Winter Led by Sarah Wright, UW's Center for Biology Education
Learn about who's out and about in the winter cold and strategies plants and animals use to survive. We will practice 'phenology,' or the study of the timing of nature's cycles, drawing inspiration from Aldo Leopold to find out what our creature friends are doing! Please dress warmly for outdoor adventures!
One Bird, Two Birds. Red Birds, but no Blue Birds Led by Robert Bohanan, UW’s Center for Biology Education
How are birds the same? How are they different? Why do birds sing? Is the song always the same? We will observe and learn to identify birds by sight and by song. We will compare how birds feed, how they fly, where they live, and how they sing.
Carbon, Climate
and Conservation Led by Emily Loew, UW Center for
Biology Education and AmeriCorps*VISTA
Become a carbon
dioxide molecule and experiment with carbon dioxide to learn how this
"greenhouse gas" is changing our climate. Play Species
Scramble and how climate change may affect relationships among
species! Learn where carbon dioxide comes from and what you can do
about it!
Learn How
Plants Grow, Eat What You Know! Led by Brent Kramer,
Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch and Nathan Larson, Community
GroundWorks at Troy Gardens
People depend on plants to live and grow. But how much of your food comes from plants? And how many different parts of plants can you eat? Join us to talk about (and taste!) some of the nutritious and delicious food that plants make for people.
Juggling - It's
all Attitude & a Little Altitude. Led by
Madison's comedy juggler, Truly Remarkable Loon
Anyone can
learn how to juggle if they have a positive attitude. After a
brief juggling demonstration you'll learn to toss juggle with scarves
and how to balance objects on your body. Participants will also
get to try their hand at Loon's favorite juggling form: a gyroscope
known as the diabolo. Bonus points if you know what 'diabolo'
means.
