In the Heron Network, centered in Madison, Wisconsin, elementary students, teachers, parents, and community partners engage together in long-term inquiries.
Students write articles about their investigations, published in Great Blue: A Journal of Student Inquiry. They raise money for the journal by performing in the annual Great Blue Variety Show. All of the classrooms gather once or twice a year for student conferences.
Since 1992, Heron classrooms have collaborated with each other in exchanging videos, building museum exhibits, taking fieldtrips to nearby ecosystems, and other projects.
